Ohio Dominican University students homeless, protect themselves.
I respect Noelle Lines and her student employees at Ohio Dominican University for knitting hats for homeless people to protect themselves from the cold weather (“Fruit of the looms,” Dispatch article, Tuesday). However, I’m also afraid that this well-intended gesture may not be as helpful as they think.
Before asking the students if they wanted to knit warm items for the homeless people, did Lines ask the homeless people if they wanted this help? Maybe there are reasons why they don’t have or want hats and scarves for other than ones we think.
Change is most effective and guaranteed when we engage in a conversation with the people whom we want to help and then provide solutions accordingly.
