Mike Pence, Ilhan Omar: “those who engage in anti-Semitic tropes”.

Vice President Mike Pene suggested Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) should resign from the House Foreign Affairs Committee and said “those who engage in anti-Semitic tropes” should face consequences.

“[Omar’s] tweets were a disgrace & her apology was inadequate. Anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress, much less the Foreign Affairs Committee,” Pence wrote, days after Omar tweeted “it’s all about the Benjamins” while commenting on AIPAC’s political influence. “Those who engage in anti-Semitic tropes should not just be denounced, they should face consequences for their words.”

NBC News anchor Andrea Mitchell reported that Pence’s tweet means he believes Omar should step down from her committee role.

Earlier today, President Donald Trump joined the growing call from Republicans for Omar to resign from Congress, despite his own history of anti-Semitism.

“I think she should be ashamed of herself,” Trump told reporters today, after saying Omar should quit “Congress or she should certainly resign from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.”

The president’s commentary on the issue caused his own record of anti-Semitic tropes to resurface, including a clip from a 2015 speech where Trump told a Jewish group, “You’re not going to support me because I don’t want your money. You want to control your own politicians.”

He also claimed to be “a negotiator like you folks; we’re negotiators.”

In 2016, Trump — who launched his campaign on a platform of Islamaphobia, namely his proposed policy to ban all Muslims from America — was also caught sharing anti-Semitic white supremacist memes on Twitter.
